Here is my YouTube video showing what to do – exercise with me! (and excuse my headless jumping jacks 😂)

Two-digit subtraction

Today’s lesson is about two-digit subtraction. This is when you subtract two numbers with two digits from each other. Let’s use an example to help me explain. We will be figuring out how much 53 – 12 is.

First, write them down like this:

5 3

-1 2

First, you are going to look at the last two numbers. You are going to subtract the top one from the bottom one:

5 3

-1 2

_1

Now, you do the same for the front numbers:

5 3

-1 2

4 1

And now you have the answer: 53 – 12 = 41

Here is my video with instructions:

Here is a worksheet for you to practice:

Science 🔬

Virus

Viruses are tiny living creatures that get into cells of other creatures (including people) and get them sick. They are so tiny that it’s hard to find them, even using microscopes. They destroy data in cells and kill them. Viruses need to be inside other living beings to survive. But they are everywhere and we have to fight them all the time, even though we can’t see them.

Common illnesses caused by viruses are cold, flu and measles. Some people try using antibiotics to get better, but those do not kill viruses. There are few medications that actually kill viruses. The best thing to do is to prevent people from getting sick, including getting vaccinated and practicing good behaviors. Wash your hands often and well. Don’t sneeze or cough on other people. You should cough into your elbow or a tissue instead.

Social science 👩‍🎓

Marie Curie

Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. When she was a teenager, she taught school to earn money. She wanted to go to school in Paris, France. In college, she met Pierre Curie, her future husband and research partner. They had a daughter together, named Irene Curie (later Irene Joliot-Curie, another Nobel-prize winning lady!). She died on July 4, 1934 from cancer caused by her research.

She discovered two radioactive elements, radium and polonium. With her husband, they developed theory of radioactivity, which earned them a Nobel Prize in physics. This made her the first woman to win one. Eight years later, she won a Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovery of radium and polonium. To this day, she is the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different fields of science.
